How do I intend to approach the landscape part of the brief?
Before todays lecture I was rather apprehensive of the landscape aspect of the brief, and planned to shoot my landscapes first, and then to manipulate still life and portraits around my landscapes to fit a colour/light/ anything really rather than the other way around. I was quite happy to do this, but today really changed my view of landscapes as a whole.
Traditionally, landscapes are split into three categories, the beautiful, the picturesque and the sublime.
A brief outline of each; a beautiful landscape is a classic what you'd expect a landscape to be; nature at its finest, its beauty is comprehensible, and unlike the sublime, evokes similar experiences and feelings of joy and fulfilment. (Blanton, J, Blanton museum, Austin, Tx. )
An example of a beautiful landscape:
Höfer, C. (2009) Biblioteca del Girolamini Napoli I.
Situated between the serenely beautiful and the awe inspiring sublime, characteristics of a picturesque landscape are unusual details which spark curiosity, and a contrasting palette of light to dark.
An example of a picturesque landscape:
George, D. (2012) Backwater.
The sublime is different from the beautiful in its ability to evoke intense emotions of awe, through the fearsome qualities of nature and how overwhelming it can be; it thrives in the impossibility of the spectator being in control. (Bate, D. (2016) Photography)
An example of a sublime landscape:
Misrach, R, (2007) On the Beach.
Following the lecture I plan to experiment more with landscapes and what they mean to me. I have taken my first set of landscapes and I know I want to include colour and for my landscapes to have a solid structure, but I plan to look into the possibility of a landscape not being ‘conventional’ and looking into blurring the line between landscape and still life; after realising that I have a lot more scope to stretch my ideas as long as I can make an argument for them. My approach will be documentary, and potentially bordering the beautiful if I were to categorise them, however this will most probably change as I develop my ideas and broaden my research.
