Interchange Day 1

Today I attended the 5 year plan interchange session. I found it very helpful and made lots of notes. Below are my notes. I think the talk had potential to be quite boring and I was skeptical before I went; I only went because I thought it was going to be beneficial not because I thought it was going to be interesting or engaging. HOWEVER I found the way it was presented made a great deal of difference which how engaging and helpful I found the information provided.


STAGE 1 : Identify your dream job- 15 questions to focus on your dream

Do you prefer working in a group or on your own- Both
Which is more support security or adventure- Both
what aspect of your field of study do you like best? fashion photography
how important is time off to you? Not overly important, I can take pictures anywhere. 
Who’s work inspires you and what do you find inspirational about it? seeing published work motivating me to get better so I can be published too. 
what element of your course have you enjoyed most? Self initiated brief
what piece of work are you most proud of? My current work
what aspect of the course do you find most difficult- constant documenting and writing about my decisions in my visual logbook
what are 5 unrelated jobs to your course you enjoy? graphic design, fashion buying, visual merchandising, 
Do you prefer to be a leader or supporter? both because I like being in charge but I can be a bit lazy
Do you like to travel? Yes
How well do you cope with stress? Need to avoid stress
How much income do you need to maintain your lifestyle now? in 10 years? 100K joint income minimum 
would you be willing to relocate if required for your career? Yes 

Work out a budget
Look up prestigious awards in photography 
Look into an individuals path/history to their current job position 

STAGE 2 : Research The Path-

List 3 Jobs in your field that match your interests. Be Specific
travel photographer 
fashion photographer
social media manager

Research these roles and identify any requirements
Will you need any additional training and experience?
Identify and research 5 individuals who hold your dream job(s)
What path did they take? Could this apply to you?
What are your strengths/weaknesses/opportunities/threats?

SWOT Analysis

Strengths- Self motivated, experience working with live clients, persevere even if the work is challenging 
Weakness- Not advanced\skilled with some of the software and programmes
Opportunities - internships, competitions 
Threats- need to be more organised, need to accept constructive criticism  

Mention on CV - Driving License


Plan for your Dream Job-

Emphasise/ focus on your strengths
Eliminate your weaknesses
Take advantage of opportunities
Address your threats
Schedule specific, achievable goals
        must be firm/measurable 
        must have a deadline
        smaller short term goals
        Larger long term goals  

Smaller Short Term Goals
I will write at least 2 blog posts a day 
I will write one reflective post every 2 days 
I will shoot at least twice a week 

Larger long term goals  
I want to get the majority of my income from commissions from photography jobs, specifically editorial. 

"The only reason you will not get your dream job is if you have decided you do not want it anymore."



STAGE 3 : Build Your Personal Pitch
Developing your profile

Update CV - WRITE ABOUT YOU, talk meaningful, sell yourself uniquely 
Portfolio- should be mailable, make sure there high resolution, place now website if too big still 
Website- make it easy for them to hire you, don’t make it hard work, only upload your best work, Be honest 
Special Skills - I persevere with any project even if It is challenging 
Awards- are endorsements of your work
Blogs
What is your perspective? what is your taste, response, opinion, vision 

Apply for competitions!!!!!!!!

Get To Know The Right People
know why you are contacting a person
Make a powerful impression
Learn something from every contact
Get two referrals from every contact
Contact every new referral you receive
Write Thank You letters To every person You Contact
Keep an accurate list of follow up activities - remember how you met them, when to send a thank you note & present, place phone contacts 

STAGE 4 :

Be Early to any meeting!! (10-15 mins)
Look presentable -clean tidy, look like you value yourself 
(first impression will be formed on what you’re wearing/presented)
Write thankyou notes to anyone that helps you 

Ask for help 
Where to start?
Hot, Warm, and cold contacts
Make yourself useful
Influences that matter
easier to network in Pairs
A good networker is a good listener - Let them do a lot of the talking

Company/websites 

STAGE 5 :
Emailing someone and benefits -

Got to introduce yourself/ reach out
Let them know what you want, be clear and precise (answer questions?)
Compliment them, tell them you’re interested in there work and why
Research them, are they useful?
Can identify what not to talk about also
opportunity to network further 
offering them a value of your time for yourself to learn form that individual even if its unpaid 
be wary when someone is no longer useful for yourself if you’re not being paid 
exposure and credit for yourself 
creatively satisfying, artistically exciting 

Money - To begin with say what you need, when you step up each time ask for more
Ask for what you want otherwise you will never know if you can have it 
Network with the influencer rather than the important person as they are more likely to acknowledge and appreciate your work


Revise Your Plan:

Revisit your plan monthly to asses and revise -
What might you want to change or rethink based on new information?
Set backs happen- plan on them!
If you’re ahead of schedule, set higher goals - don’t slow down!
