My first paid job
15:41
A couple days ago I had the opportunity to shoot for an upcoming magazine called 'Rover', an online magazine focusing on culture and travel. My images will feature in its first issue, in an article about an artist called Sam, who created and painted the mural in the restaurant Alley Olé, a new spanish tapas restaurant near uni. I got to go shoot some portraits of him, and see his work too.
This was my first experience of working with people who I had never met before, which was quite a big step for me. Being paid as well added a little extra pressure but I was really happy with how the hour went, and the graphic designer who the shoot was for was really happy with the outcome too. The whole experience made my confidence grow, and I'd feel more comfortable putting myself up for paid work now.
Sam, the artist, was quite a difficult subject to shoot. He was quite camera shy and hated looking at the camera. He was very playful and I did my best to capture his personality in the outside shots. It did make the task a little bit more difficult but I was happy with the shots I got. And learning to shoot subjects who may not feel totally comfortable in front of the lens and making them feel more at ease I found easier than I thought too.
