Technical Workshop Week 11

11:38

For this weeks workshop we experimented with flash accessories and the effect each of them brought to the photograph.

One of my personal aims for todays workshop was to master the radio sync for the flash heads, as this is something I haven't understood clearly and something which is rather important when setting up a studio and assisting others.
To set up the radio sync I need to press both the up and down arrows at the same time and then press the bulb button until the 'f' option appears. This is what needs to be synced with the number on the radio sync. Previously I have been confused as there are other options such as 'r' and 'g' but Richard assured me that the only one I need to worry about is 'f', and that even he isn't sure what the others do totally, but that 'g' should be set to one. I am glad I now have this knowledge which will definitely come in handy in future workshops or if I plan to hire the studio out for myself.

This shot we used an umbrella to soften the harsh light, giving a much softer effect.

Here we used a softbox to soften the lighting even more than the umbrella, I really like the effect the softbox gives an image, it is much more flattering.

For this photograph  we used a snoot. I had never come across one before so it was fun experimenting; the effect it gave the lighting was a darker feel compared to other flash accessories.

Our final experiment was with a beauty dish. I had never used one of these before either and it was interesting to see if it lived up to its name. I liked the natural tones which the gold beauty dish gave and this was my favourite tone out of the possible three beauty dish attachments.

This image used the sliver beauty dish, which gave a much colder feel than its gold counterpart. I was surprised to see how much of a difference this attachment brought to the tones of the photograph and understand how this can be manipulated to alter the mood of an image.

This image is slightly overexposed as we didn't alter our settings between swapping out the different beauty dish attachments; however this was so we could see the true difference between each one. This photograph was taken using the transparent beauty dish, which doesn't have too much of an effect compared to the others as a lot more light is being let through.

My favourite flash accessory is either the beauty dish with the gold attachment or the softbox. Both of these accessories don't give a too dissimilar effect from one another; both are natural and flattering, and I plan to experiment and use these further in my ongoing projects which involve studio lighting.
