Technical Workshop Week 13

22:00

This week we experimented with hard light portraits and various dramatic moods which can be achieved through lighting, in contrast to last weeks workshop where we focused on softer lit portraiture.

Image one was taken using one key flash for a hard light portrait, only lighting one side of the face.

we experimented with the use of a beauty dish in the images also, seeing what the effect of this will be. This shot isn't as dramatic as others have been as half of my face is away from the camera so you cannot see any shadows from where light isn't getting to parts of my face.

Here in these two we used a back light to light the back of my hair to try and create a really dramatic halo around my head, however it just illuminated the edges of my hair, which although wasn't as harsh as we wanted, still gives a dramatic effect using multiple flashheads.

Here we added a softbox to the light to see if it made a difference, however we were asked to make all light dramatic and harsh so this doesn't fulfil the brief.

This is my favourite image from this workshop, we used one light and got rid of the second light which was present in the previous shot. I really like how the light is coming from above, which Matt taught us is important as we are trying to achieve ambient light, which is trying to mimic the sun, which is above us. Therefore the position of this light is important and more flattering when coming from above.
