Briefing Of BA1a Project 12"

16:26

Monday we were briefed by Matt about a short one week in duration brief focused around music; the task was to create two album covers which visually respond to our chosen artist/band, and to present it on Thursday to a group in a powerpoint with our influences and thought processes in 'Pechakucha' format; 6 slides shown for 20 seconds each. Followed by a 2 minute Q&A.

The aim of the brief is to help develop our skills and ability to research, interpret and present our ideas and so that we will be required to consider the relationship between technical application and creative possibilities.

I chose to create album covers for Disclosure's 'White noise' and Kodaline's 'Coming up for air', songs which I believe gave me a lot of scope for me to experiment creatively with.

My Process

I started off by looking into Disclosures previous albums looking for a starting point. The way the faces are highlighted here in a quirky fashion stood out to me as something I would like to experiment with.

After looking at disclosures work and wondering how I could recreate such an interesting look on a models face I came across maurizio anzeri and his editorial in Dazed and Confused where he sewed into the faces of models to create a much more dimensional surreal portrait.

I decided that I would use mixed media in my album cover and sew into an image and scan it back in to my computer to adjust later.

I really like the effect which sewing into the image brings to the photograph.

These images are illustrations by Belgian artist Raphael Vicenzi, who combines graphic design with illustration and digital images to create these interesting compositions. I really love his work and the elements which come together to compose them and knew I wanted to create this mixed media feel myself in my work.

This text I found in Company Magazine really stood out to me as bold and I knew it would stand out well on a patterned background such as my album cover. I knew I wanted to incorporate it, or something similar, into my work.

This is the final outcome of my first album cover. I believe it incorporates everything I wanted it to and fits the brief well. To achieve the look of the face similar to that of disclosures album I decided to print a portrait and sew into the image using thread, and then scan the image back in. I also scanned two images sourced from vogue magazine; A esteé lauder advert and an editorial image, to try and achieve a similar collage effect to the graphic illustrations above. I then used different tools on photoshop to create the illusion of paint and scratchings into the image.

Second Album Cover

For my Second album cover I researched Kodalines existing album covers and decided I wanted the colours not to be very bold so that it will be somewhat consistent to their collection. I also knew I still wanted to have aspects of Vicenzi's illustrations which take inspiration from graffiti and type. I went to Norwich's Anglia Square to take some images of graffiti to incorporate into my composition.

This is my final outcome of my second album cover. I am very happy with how this turned out, I was apprehensive about using myself as a model as it is something I have never done however I am glad I did and it is something I will consider in the future in future projects. I kept a border similar to my previous cover as this is something which was evident in the graphic illustrations I researched into.

Overall I am glad in the direction in which this project lead me and the outcomes I produced. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the quick turn around that it had as I thought I would be pushed for time but I didn't feel as though it was that fast paced as I anticipated.
