Technical Workshop Week 3
15:36
This weeks technical workshop introduced us to the idea of controlling light with diffusers and reflectors. In groups of four we sourced a white, black, silver and gold reflector, as well as a diffuser.
We took a shot using each reflector and the diffuser to see the effect it brought to the image.
Shot using 1/160 f/4.5 ISO 250 on Canon 600D
This image was taken using purely directional light with no reflectors. There is no light falling on the right side of her face at all, it is completely dark. Using purely directional light creates a very harsh, edgy portrait.
Shot using 1/160 f/4.5 ISO 250 on Canon 600D
This image was taken using a directional light bounced off a gold reflector. The effect of this is a lot warmer than any other reflector we used. I personally really like the colour it brought to the portrait.
Shot using 1/160 f/4.8 ISO 250 on Canon 600D
This image was taken using a directional light and a black reflector. This had barely any effect and looks pretty much the image which was purely directional light; no light hitting the side of her face which was the other side to the light.
shot using 1/160 f/4.5 ISO 250 on Canon 600D
This image was photographed using a white reflector. The effect of this wasn't too dissimilar to that of the diffuser; slightly more of the other side of the models face was lit, we can make out her features on that side of her face.
Shot using 1/160 f/4.5 ISO 250
This portrait we shot using a silver reflector. The outcome of using this resulted in the brightest image of them all; we can clearly see the models features on both sides of her face. The colour which this reflector gives is quite cold compared to the gold alternative.
Shot using 1/160 f/4.5 ISO 250 Canon 600D
This image was taken using a diffuser covering the directional light. This creates a softened effect however it didn't light up the other side of the model's face. As a team we concluded that the addition of a reflector in this shot would create a desirable feel for the portrait.
Both images shot using 1/160 f/4.5 ISO 200
For the remainder of the session we got creative using the skills we had acquired to make a portrait which we felt had the right feel to it. For these two images we used both a diffuser to soften the light and a gold reflector to achieve the warm tones which we liked from our experiments.
We asked Belle our model to turn her head slightly to highlight different parts of her face and in the second shot to bring her arm into the shot to highlight more skin tones which looked lovely and warm against the black backdrop.
