What is Context
20:19This week we were put into groups and given a research task based on context. I found an image in Vogue Italia by photographer Michal Pudelka. As a group we immediately begun to question the image and wonder why it was so stereotypical in a fashion publication in 2015.
After looking into the photographer, and asking my ever helpful flatmate to translate some Italian which was at the bottom of the editorial, and reading through various interviews with the photographer online, I discovered some very interesting facts.
Influenced by his upbringing in a communist culture; the architecture and mood he highlights as two of his biggest inspirations.
Key inspiration for this shoot was Kate Winslet in the film revolutionary road, where she plays a devote house wife.
He shoots predominately women; he believes this gives him a bigger space for realising his visions without coming across as gay, which he believes usually happens when you are being more creative with male models.

I decided to try and change the context of the image by getting rid of anything which involved cleaning, and then again by cropping out the rest of the image and focusing on the woman at the front of the shot. She is posed very provocatively, and we would assume, as the viewer, that this would be a pose in the bedroom for example. It is very controversial, and as a woman I look and this and feel its quite demeaning of the female form. I would assume the photographer was a heterosexual male.
I found this exercise very interesting, particularly in this case it was fascinating to discover the background behind this image. It taught me that first perceptions of an image are rarely correct and that contextualising an image is very important aspect to research.
