Technical Workshop Week 2

18:17

This week we focused on reinforcing our understanding of the basic controls of our 35mm DSLR cameras. To do this we made environmental and isolation portraits of each other.

We were set three tasks to complete as groups of around 4 people.

Task one was to make an environmental portrait; a portrait in which the individual depicted is photographed in a location where they live, work, rest or play. The environment can be used to say something about who the subject is, however this was not essential for this exercise. To achieve this image we had to select an aperture of F8 or greater. We also had to select an ISO and shutter speed that was appropriate to this situation. This image was to demonstrate our understanding of ‘extended depth of field’.

Task two was to make an isolation portrait; a portrait in which the subject is isolated from the background by use of a wide aperture. This achieves a blurred background effect so that attention is concentrated on the person depicted. The background conveys limited information about the subject. To achieve this we selected an aperture of F5.6 or lower, (i.e. f5.6, f4, f2.8, f2, f1.8, f1.4, f1.2). This image was to demonstrate our understanding of ‘shallow depth of field’.

Task three was to make a portrait using the time available in remainder of our session. This portrait should be of one of my fellow students and should communicate something about them. We were required to use our knowledge of the 35mm DSLR to make to make a portrait that impresses.
